A short walk from the campsite will lead you to the Petrified Forest, an ancient fossilised forest. You can see fossilised trees on the beach at low tide from a viewing platform. I found it interesting to see fossilised trees at Curio Bay as it was something I had never experienced before.

Across the road is the Living Forest which is the counterpart to the Petrified Forest. It shows how the Petrified Forest may have looked many years ago. Along the walkway are interpretive signs. I had a great experience walking in the Living Forest and enjoyed the trees and birdlife.

Curio Bay is also a yellow-eyed penguin nesting site. You can take a walk from the campsite to the lookouts and wait to see the penguins coming in from the beach and waddling along the beach to their nests. There are two options for freedom camping near Curio Bay. These are located about 6-15km from Curio Bay, and take about a 10-20 minute drive.

If you are considering freedom camping then make sure you understand and adhere to the freedom camping bylaws in New Zealand and in the area you are visiting. You will likely need a Self-Contained campervan for freedom camping although some freedom campsites allow tents and non-self-contained vehicle camping. There will be signs located at the site displaying the rules, however, if no sign is displayed it can be assumed freedom camping is allowed.

The freedom camping ground at Waikawa is a site suitable for small and medium-large campervans and motorhomes. There are minimal facilities here. There is no drinking water however there are clean toilets open all night.

Opposite the freedom camping site is the Waikawa Museum and Information Centre. Visiting this museum is an interesting experience because you can see fossilised trees and learn about the history of the area including the old Jail.

The Waikawa Recreation Reserve is the freedom camping site that I stayed at while I was visiting Curio Bay. I stayed here for two nights and I had a great experience.

6 Things To Know Before Staying At Curio Bay

Here are my top tips on how to have an excellent and memorable stay at your accommodation in Curio Bay.

1. Fill Up On Fuel Before You Go

There are no fuel stations at Curio Bay. The nearest fuel stations are the GAS Tokanui and the McKeown Papatowai.

2. Take Insect Repellent

The sandflies can be awful at Curio Bay at all times of the year. Take insect repellent and nets and wear long-sleeved clothing to minimise bites. If you are camping you may want to take incense or citronella candles that ward off insects.

3. Pack Swimming Gear, Surf & Bodyboards

Porpoise Bay is a stunning beach that is safe for swimming. On windy days it is popular with surfers and bodyboarding who enjoy riding the waves.

The pod of Hector’s dolphins that call Porpoise Bay home also love the waves and will play in the surf. If you don’t get in the water then you can easily view the dolphins from the beach. If you’re in the water they will likely swim close to you. Allow them to do their thing and remember this is a rare experience of swimming in the wild with dolphins!

4. Stock Up On Food & Drinks Before You Go

Curio Bay is a remote place and there are very few facilities in the area.

There is a cafe at the camping ground called Tumu Toka CurioScape that serves breakfast and lunch, as well as a small shop.

Besides the cafe there are few options for dining out, so you will want to take food with you so that you can self-cater during your stay in Curio Bay.

The nearest supermarket is the Four Square in Owaka. Invercargill has the big supermarkets Pak’n Save, New World and Countdown.

5. Take Your Walking Boots

Curio Bay is famous for the Petrified Forest, a 180 million-year-old ancient forest that has been fossilised. The fossils are exposed on rocks at the beach and you can see them at low tide. There are walkways to see the Petrified Forest.

Across the road is the Living Forest walkway where you can see how the Petrified Forest may have looked millions of years ago.

Beyond Curio Bay, there are many walks to beautiful waterfalls that you can visit along the Catlins coast. My favourite is McLean Falls located just a short drive from Curio Bay.

6. Carry A Camera With Zoom Lens

Curio Bay is a haven for rare New Zealand wildlife and you will likely see some during your stay.

Porpoise Bay is the home of a pod of Hector’s dolphins, an endemic species of dolphin to New Zealand.

Southern Right whales can be seen offshore as well.

Perhaps the cutest and rarest animal you can see in the wild at Curio Bay is the yellow-eyed penguin. The endemic penguins have a breeding colony at Curio Bay. Yellow-eyed penguins are classified as a ‘threatened’ species so to see one you have to be very patient and lucky!

Walkways at the top of the beach allow visitors an opportunity to observe these creatures in the wild.

Taking a camera with a zoom lens will give you a chance to photograph New Zealand’s wildlife from a safe distance.
