Queen’s View Lookout Near Pitlochry, Scotland: Quick Guide

Queen’s View is a stunning lookout in Highland Perthshire and one of the most photographed areas in Scotland. Overlooking Loch Tummel, you can enjoy views across the lake and islands, surrounding woodland and mountains as far as those near Glencoe on a clear day.

The viewpoint and visitor centre are located a few miles from the town of Pitlochry, at the edge of Tay Forest Park. Accessed by road and a short, paved walking path, the viewpoint is one of the easiest to reach in Scotland.

A visit to Queen’s View can be nice stop as part of a grander tour of the Highlands, a short visit to Tay Forest Park and Highland Perthshire, a day trip to explore the local towns and villages of Killiecrankie or Pitlochry, or a destination unto itself.

Queen’s View History

Located in Highland Perthshire, the story goes that the lookout was named after Queen Isabella of Scotland, Robert the Bruce’s wife, who used the spot as a resting place on her travels in the 14th Century.

The view is one of the most celebrated in Scotland, and has been drawing visitors for over a century.

Queen Victoria visited the area in 1866 and enjoyed tea there.

It is said that the view is “Fit For A Queen” because it is so beautiful.

Queen’s View Over Loch Tummel

The viewpoint looks west and shows a stunning view over Loch Tummel, with the pointed peak of Shiehallion in the distance.

Reaching the viewpoint is easy – it takes just a short, flat, paved walk from the car park. There is a fenced area to enjoy the view.

Best Time To Visit Queen’s View Perthshire

Queen’s View can be accessed all year round, but in the winter it could be challenging due to snow.

The best time to visit is in the summer or autumn, when the magnificent countryside is looking vibrant. In the autumn in particular, beautiful colourful leaves will give a glow to the trees, which is beautiful to see (autumn is my favourite season!).

Queen’s View Visitor Centre & Cafe

Queen’s View Visitor Centre and Cafe is open 10 am – 3 pm every day.

In the Visitor’s Centre, you can see the seat that Queen Victoria sat in during her visit to Queen’s View in 1866.

There is a lot of information about the local fauna and flora, and an opportunity to find out more about the variety of woodland trees and wildlife in the area.

They also sell books, postcards and gifts.

Queen’s View Cafe has a nice selection of cakes, teas and coffees and cosy seating space you can relax in. They also have toilets.

Allean Forest Trail – A Walk Near Queen’s View

If you have more time to spend in the area, there is a walk you can do around the area’s woodland called the Allean Forest Trail.

The walk is a circular route and takes around 1.5-2 hrs to complete.

The trail passes through woodland with great views over the Tummel Valley.

How To Get To Queen’s View Lookout, Scotland

By car: A short, and at times rather steep, drive down the B8019 will bring you to Queen’s View. This is a winding, tree-lined road along the River Tummel. There is a car park which costs £3 per day between 9 am and 5 pm. I believe the ticket can be used at other car parks in the area on the same day.

By bus: There is a bus (No. 82) from Pitlochry run by Elizabeth Yule, which goes to Queens View and takes about 20 minutes.

By train: Pitlochry has a train station operated by ScotRail. Direct services run from Edinburgh and Glasgow and take around 1hr 45 min.

By tour: You can join a tour which visits Queen’s View as part of their tour of Perthshire Big Tree Country. This day trip tour departs from Edinburgh and visits the Highlands, Pitlochry and a distillery and makes a stop at the Queen’s View as part of the itinerary.
